Corrections please!

Personally I love getting corrected. It makes me feel like I’ve really learned something new for the day. The correction that I listen to most is to be present while dancing. Sometimes I think I’m being present when I’m really off in my dream land and messing up on the choreography given for that day. Other times I’m overly present and notice the others that are day-dreaming the class away. I realized lately that I sometimes take the corrections too personally and I start to get harsh feelings towards the way I dance but in talking to the other dancers who have been here longer I realized that the corrections should be taken constructively and not personally. That really opened my eyes to how dance is interpreted by different people. I can honestly say that I have found myself during these past few months at HCC and I hope to continue doing so 🙂

Pop Culture

Pop culture can be defined diferently by everyone. My definition is interpreted by  the music I listen to, the foods I eat, the clothes I wear, and the surroundings I’m in. It all effects my technique differently everyday.

Music: I listen to almost everything but the genre I listen to most would have to be Indie, Folk, rock, and rap. Indie makes me dance in a very fluid way. Folk makes me skip and make a lot of jumping movements. rock brings out the inventive and intense side of me. Rap, last but not least, brings out the hip shaking body rolling side of me. Depending on which type of music I listen to, to warm up before class is going to effect  my technique for ballet and modern

Food: I live in the fast -pace generation that is “the future”. This means I’m on the go all the time. Most people my age eat nasty greasy foods that can effect the way you dance. The only time I feel unhealthy is when I have no choice but to eat the cafe foods at my college. Otherwise, I’m eating healthier than I ever have in my life. This effects my technique by allowing me to feel light on my feet and full throughout my classes.

Clothes: I used to wear very binding/ tight clothes but now that I’m dancing for most of the day I’ve retired to my jeans, tank tops, wraps, and sandals. Wearing these types of clothes makes me feel free. feeling more in-tune with myself makes me feel more like the dancer I have become.

Surroundings: Most of the time I’m either at the studio or at my apartment. The studio effects my technique because that’s where I get all my technique from :). My apartment is a very relaxing place. It’s my place to shake away the stress and concentrate on what’s important to me and really get in tune with myself.

All of these things change the way my technique is everyday. I don’t think there’s anyway to keep your technique the same in this crazy generation but I believe that life would be boring if things didn’t change daily.
